This is the face of six. One of the many birthday traditions at our house is birthday streamers on your door when you wake up in the morning. Except this year, someone neglected to make sure there were actually streamers present in the house, so we opted for birthday ribbons. Same idea. Ansley even reminded me of it the night before, not that I'd forget.
And, new this year, the tradition of Daddy going to work a little later and Ansley choosing where she wants to go for breakfast. She chose Mimi's (and it's important to remember when Christian is around to make sure you point out Mimi's RESTAURANT and not the actual Mimi) and we all enjoyed a yummy family breakfast together.
When Mimi, JonJon and Missy were in town, we went out for a birthday dinner. Ansley chose Red Lobster, so we asked if they could do something special. All they did was come to the table and sing. It was pretty lame, really. You can't even give a scoop of ice cream to a six year old who chose to come to your restaurant on her birthday?
So next up was Mimi's, and since it was on the actual DAY, of course we wanted to celebrate. (We're all about celebrating birthdays, in case you missed that). So I mentioned it to our server, who brought out the huge Mimi muffin with a lit candle. Ansley was all smiles and thought it was great.
But the Best Birthday Award, by far, goes to the dinnertime pick. I know, maybe a little overboard on the eating out, but it was a busy day. Oh, and another birthday tradition we started this year is: no school on your birthday! Why not? It's an advantage to homeschooling. Plus she had ballet and soccer. So after soccer practice we always go to Famous Dave's because they have a feast that feeds our whole family for $20. We mention the birthday thing to our server again, and she smiles and says sure. A few minutes later we look up (I so wish I had a picture) and here comes a huge hot fudge sundae with, seriously, a big firecracker sparkly thing shooting out the top. Ansley's eyes lit up - she thought it was wonderful. We all sang, and she enjoyed her sundae. As did the rest of us.
So, the moral of the story: go to Famous Dave's for your children's birthdays. They do you right.
