This past weekend, we headed up to the mountains (again!) with some friends to see the synchronous fireflies in the Smokies. We had heard of these for years, and thought it would be really cool, but since you have to wait til it's pitch dark, we always thought Avery was too young. Until this year!
This was an area of the Smokies that we hadn't explored before. It was absolutely beautiful, and the kids enjoyed running around exploring after we enjoyed a picnic by one of the creepy cabins (see below).
You know we love us a mountain stream. This one was just SO pretty! This family has three girls, so....poor Christian. I just keep telling myself that he will be such a wonderful husband because he was around girls all the time. We seem to know a lot of families with girls, but not so many with boys. Anyway....back to the mountains!
This area had a bunch of abandoned cabins, AKA creepy cabins, named by the kids. We had a picnic beside one of them. At least during the daylight, they weren't so creepy; I found them fascinating, wondering who had lived in them and what life was like for them.
Ansley and Addisyn by one of the cabins. This is a fairly new friendship, and these girls have really hit it off! I love the sweet group of friends that Ansley has!
Rock hopping. Yep, Avery has a maxi dress on.
I have to say, it was really cool to see the fireflies. There are only a handful of places in the entire world where this happens, so it's pretty cool that one of those places is near us. Everyone had fun exploring, and it was even a fun adventure to sit in pitch darkness and watch the beautiful display!
I think the synchronous fireflies would be super cool! I've never heard of that before.

How fun! I had to look it up since I had never heard of Synchronous fireflies. This is an interesting video from the Sunday Morning show that I showed my boys so they could get a peek. Slight reference to mating around minute 4. ;-)
